Faults in the San Francisco Bay
The Bay Area is one of the most seismically active regions in the world due to its location along the Pacific and North American tectonic plates. Earthquakes are inevitable in the Bay Area, but preparation can save lives and your property. Below are the major faults in the Bay area.
San Andreas Fault – The most well-known fault, running from Southern California through the Bay Area. It was responsible for the devastating 1906 San Francisco earthquake and the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake.
Hayward Fault – Runs parallel to the San Andreas Fault, passing through the East Bay (Oakland, Berkeley, Hayward, Fremont). It has a high probability of generating a major earthquake in the near future.
Calaveras Fault – A branch of the San Andreas system, affecting areas like San Jose and the South Bay.
Rodgers Creek Fault – Extends through the North Bay and is considered highly active.
Concord-Green Valley Fault – Affects the East Bay, particularly Contra Costa County.
Scientists predict that there is a 72% chance of a magnitude 6.7 or larger earthquake occurring in the Bay Area within the next 30 years.
How to Prepare for a Potential Earthquake
Before an Earthquake
✅ Know your Property Position – Understand what type of soil your property is on!
✅ Create an Emergency Kit – Include water (1 gallon per person per day), non-perishable food, flashlight, batteries, first aid supplies, medications, cash, and important documents.
✅ Secure Your Home – Bolt heavy furniture to walls, secure gas and water heaters, and install latches on cabinets.
✅ Develop a Family Emergency Plan – Designate a safe meeting place and communication plan in case of separation.
✅ Know Safe Spots – Identify sturdy tables, doorways, and structural supports where you can take cover.
During an Earthquake
🛑 Drop, Cover, and Hold On – Get under a sturdy piece of furniture and protect your head.
🚪 Stay Indoors – If you are inside, do not run outside, as falling debris poses a danger.
🚗 If Driving – Pull over to a safe location, avoid bridges and overpasses, and stay in the car.
🌊 If Near the Coast – Move to higher ground in case of a tsunami warning.
After an Earthquake
⚠️ Check for Injuries & Hazards – Help others if possible, turn off gas if you smell a leak, and check for structural damage.
📢 Follow Emergency Alerts – Use a battery-powered radio or phone to get updates.
🏠 Be Ready for Aftershocks – These can occur minutes, hours, or even days after the main quake.
